Steve Happi

Music producer and activist

Steve Happi is a Cameroonian music producer, sound engineer and activist, best known as the co-founder of Jail Time Records, the groundbreaking non-profit label and recording studio established inside Douala Central Prison in Cameroon. After spending nearly two years incarcerated before being acquitted, Happi helped create what is believed to be the first permanent recording studio inside an African prison, using music as a tool for rehabilitation, creative expression and social change. Through Jail Time Records, he has worked with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists, challenging assumptions about imprisonment, punishment and freedom while building an internationally recognised platform for voices rarely heard. His documentary Jail  Time Records premiered at the TriBeCa Film Festival this year.
